Step outside the city and into the vibrant ecosystem of Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge!
This landscape’s transformation from a 1940s military site to one of the nation’s largest urban wildlife refuges began in 1986 with the discovery of roosting Bald Eagles. Today, it’s a haven for wildlife and a gateway for all to explore the natural world just beyond Denver.
The Refuge stretches across more than 15,000 acres of protected habitats, providing a home for a huge variety of wildlife. From bison and deer to hawks and waterfowl, it’s also a place to find rarer species like Mississippi Kites and several types of owls. Each tour reveals beautiful landscapes and offers great opportunities for photography and wildlife observation, no matter the season.
Whether you’re just starting your birding journey or you’ve been at it for years, this three-hour tour invites you to connect with the natural world, gain insights from an experienced guide, and explore the Refuge in a way you won’t soon forget.

Expert Guide
Jeff Birek
Jeff is a professional ornithologist who has spent more than two decades in the field across 27 countries on five continents: studying birds, training biologists, and finding the kind of rarities that still show up in field notes years later. Over 15 years working with the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Point Blue Conservation Science, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and a dozen other agencies and universities, he led large-scale bird monitoring programs across nine states and trained more than 200 field biologists to identify birds by sight and sound.
He has personally found the first breeding American Three-toed Woodpeckers in Nebraska in nearly a century, a Laysan Albatross lost in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, and critically endangered Black Stilts in New Zealand. Jeff founded Pteravia Conservation Birding Tours to put all of it to use.
