Pteravia’s Journey: A Vision Rooted in Conservation and Exploration

My professional path toward founding Pteravia began with years of dedication to nonprofits such as the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Pronatura Veracruz, and the Institute for Wildlife Studies. In these roles, I deepened my commitment to conservation while fostering a vision of connecting people with the birds and wild places I worked to protect. Each experience became a building block for something greater—a vision that would eventually take flight as Pteravia.
A New Chapter in Seattle: Where Pteravia Took Shape
Life took a major turn when my wife started a physician assistant program, prompting our move from Colorado to Seattle. There, I began consulting on environmental projects and monitoring marine mammals and seabirds across Puget Sound. It was in Seattle’s Pacific Tower, with its sweeping views of the Olympic Peninsula and nearby ancient sequoias, that I first sketched the vision for Pteravia.
The name “Pteravia” was carefully chosen, blending ptera (wing) and via (road), with avia (bird) as an added bonus. It felt perfect for a company rooted in nature and exploration—one that would inspire others to connect with the natural world.
Turning an Idea Into a Calling
After Seattle, my work brought me to California, where I consulted for wildfire mitigation projects, and then to Colorado, contributing to construction initiatives. Each chapter of my career strengthened the vision for Pteravia, transforming it from a concept into a calling.
It wasn’t just about birds anymore—it was about people. I wanted to create journeys that would allow others to experience the wonder of nature and the joy of discovery while championing conservation.
Crafting Journeys for Discovery and Conservation
Today, Pteravia is no longer just a vision; it’s a thriving reality. Through carefully curated birding tours, I have the privilege of sharing my passion for the natural world with others. Each journey offers an opportunity to connect with birds, wild places, and like-minded explorers, all while contributing to conservation efforts.
